Swans star in AFLX
Four Sydney Swans lined up in the 2019 AFLX competition, held at Marvel Stadium on Friday, February 22.
Isaac Heeney, Luke Parker, Josh Kennedy and Aliir Aliir were all selected in the inaugural AFLX draft run by captains Patrick Dangerfield, Eddie Betts, Nat Fyfe and Jack Riewoldt.
Heeney was the first Swans player chosen when Fyfe picked him for the ‘Flyers’ team alongside Aliir Aliir, and co-captain Josh Kennedy.
Captain Jack Riewoldt and the Rampage managed to steal the AFLX title away from Nat Fyfe’s Flyers, with a goal just before the full-time siren in the grand final.
A highlight of the night was the ‘game changer’, which allows one player from each side to kick double the points in the last five minutes of a match.
The four teams competed for a prize pool of $50,000, with $30,000 given to the nominated charity of the winner, $10,000 to the runner-up and $5,000
Meanwhile, the Swans flourished in their practice match against the GWS Giants in Blacktown, with a 24-point win over their cross-town rivals.
It marks an exciting preview of what is to come in the AFL season, with the Swans set to play 11 games at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Their home season begins against the Adelaide Crows on March 29, before fixtures against the Melbourne Demons, Essendon Bombers and Collingwood Magpies.
