SCG completes mega turf job

The Sydney Cricket and Sports Grounds have partnered with a group of Western Sydney businesses to complete a mega turf replacement at the SCG, following back-to-back U2 concerts.

A total 16,500sqm of turf was laid over the last week with the SCG’s providers, Evergreen, overseeing a four-day job, which included 64 trucks-worth of turf and 30 crew working around the clock.

Evergreen, based out of Pitt Town, are considered world leaders in the turf industry and completed the SCG renovation with the support of local Western Sydney businesses including Dad and Dave’s Turf, Elite Sand and Soil, Living Turf, AT Turf Consulting, Signature Haulage, Ron’s Rubbish Removal, Tough Labour Hire and Southern Cross Turf.

The partnership with Evergreen came to prominence when the SCG hosted the Major League Baseball Series Opener between the Arizona Diamondbacks and LA Dodgers in 2014.

“This is a fabulous partnership between the SCG and Evergreen, which places us both at the forefront of turf technology and allows us to help champion local Western Sydney businesses,” said SCG CEO Kerrie Mather.

“The relationship has supported a number of community and charitable initiatives including our sponsorship of the Come-By-Chance Picnic Races and Evergreen’s restoration of rural sporting fields.

“It’s amazing to think that through the SCG’s connection with the Pitt Town turf farm Evergreen is now leading the way in Australia by using our ground to pioneer their ‘Matrix’ instant play technology.”

Evergreen has recently taken their experience to the United States where they have partnered with the University of Arkansas to install the Australian ‘Matrix’ system in place of astroturf at the 70,000-seat College Football stadium.

Their efforts during the field-of-play renovation to get the SCG ready for the summer of cricket saw more than 75 percent of turf recycled and the use of up to 90 percent of bore water.
