Roosters Triumph in Anzac Day Cup

A total of 38,414 fans attended the Anzac Day Cup at the SCG, with the Sydney Roosters beating the St George Illawarra Dragons in an enthralling contest.

It was an emotional day with veterans past and present honoured in a pre-game Anzac Day ceremony, setting the tone for the biggest day on the rugby league regular season calendar.

The home team had a triumphant 14-0 lead after 40 minutes and resisted a spirited Dragons comeback in the second half.

The Roosters enjoyed 60 per cent of possession throughout the game with the Dragons making a whopping 203 tackles, compared to 107 by the Tri-colours.

The Roosters’ 20-10 win over a gutsy Dragons side was their seventh win in the annual contest and continues their best start to the season since 1999.

"It was a tough battle," Roosters skipper Boyd Cordner told Nine's Brad Fittler after the game.

"It always is ANZAC Day games against the Dragons. We played good footy. We seemed to hang in there.’’

Patrons enjoyed the festivities on Driver Avenue and two-up in the Sydney Live Plaza, hosted by Dragons legend Jason Nightingale.

The Roosters next home game is on Saturday, May 4 against Wests Tigers and tickets can be purchased here.
