Sports stars SCG sleepout for youth homelessness
SPORTS STARS SCG SLEEPOUT FOR YOUTH HOMELESSNESS
Two dozen elite athletes will give up their beds for a wintry night without shelter on August 5 to express their solidarity and raise money for some of Australia’s most vulnerable during Homelessness Week.
Former and current athletes who have committed to this year’s Sleepout on the SCG pitch, with only a sleeping bag and a sheet of cardboard, include a host of NSW male and female cricketers, Paralympians, Olympians and others from sports such as water polo, rugby league, soccer and powerlifting.
The Chappell Foundation’s (TCF) second annual Sports Stars Sleepout at the SCG highlights the plight of more than 43,000 Australians under the age of 25 who are homeless on any given night.
TCF raised more than $500,000 in the past year which has been donated to frontline organisations such as Back Track Youth Works, Ecumenical Coffee Brigade, Stepping Stone House and Waverley Action for Youth Services.
Cricketer Moises Henriques attended the inaugural Sports Stars Sleepout and has since become a board member of The Chappell Foundation.
“Nobody wants to live without a roof over their heads,” he said.
“More often than not they are a victim of awful circumstance and I think if every Australian could just have a little bit more empathy for the journey that they (the homeless) have to go on it won’t take much to help – many hands make light work.”
Some of those who will join brothers Greg and Trevor Chappell, Rugby League legend Brad Fittler, inimitable Broadcaster Kerry O’Keefe, SCG Trustee Stuart Macgill, at the Sports Stars Sleepout on August 5 include:
Cricketers – NSW openers Nick Larkin & Daniel Hughes, Lauren Cheatle, Lisa Griffith, Lauren Smith, Naomi Stalenberg, Brothers Jack & Mickey Edwards, Harry Conway & Nick Bertus, & coaches Jon Moss and Andre Adams, Paralympic gold medallists – Louise Sauvage & Michael Milton Young Matilda & Sydney FC – Ally Green Australia’s strongest woman – Najat Khoury Water Polo legend Mel Rippon & former Hockeyroo Allison Yeoland
