SCG to offer free wi-fi for all fans

The Sydney Cricket Ground has installed free wi-fi across the entire venue in time for the New Year's Test between Australia and India.

The latest initiative, funded by the NSW Government in preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup in 2020, arrives in time for what will be the SCG’s busiest 12 months since 1987, with the return of the rectangular codes during the redevelopment of Allianz Stadium.

The project builds on the success of the award-winning Noble Bradman Messenger Stand, which was the first spectator facility in the southern hemisphere to offer fans free wi-fi and a vast IPTV network.

SCG Chief Executive, Kerrie Mather: “The SCG continues to evolve its offering and remains a global leader when it comes to stadium technology innovation and infrastructure.

“The wi-fi upgrade is just one step in getting Sydney ready to host the ICC T20 World Cup, which will bring the best men’s and women’s cricketers on the planet to our great city in 2020.

“We’re continuing to look at ways to improve the customer experience and the redevelopment of Allianz Stadium presented an opportunity to relocate existing infrastructure to the public areas of the SCG.

“Panels from super screens have also been used to improve the SCG’s big screens, with the Dally Messenger screen now the biggest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

“We’re delighted that the NSW Government has supported the interests of so many sporting fans as we continue to work towards an exciting future for Sydney’s major event venues.”

NSW Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres: "Technology is now such an important part of the sports experience. Our T20 World Cup had technology upgrades as a key component and that is a great win for sports fans."

The wi-fi upgrade will be an exciting addition to the Sydney Sixers’ BBL and WBBL fixtures, the New Year’s Test and NSW Waratahs, Sydney Roosters, Sydney Swans and Sydney FC matches to be played at the ground during the three-year rebuild of Allianz Stadium.

In June, the SCG won the global Stadium Business Venue Technology Award for the SCG’s ‘Venue Operations Centre and Digital Upgrade’, with the $3.5 million investment equipping the ground with the latest security infrastructure for major events.

It marked the second time the SCG has won the award, having previously been recognised for the 2016 technology upgrade, which saw in-seat mobile ordering and advancements in IPTV rolled out across the entire precinct.
