Prince Edward's SCG visit
His Royal Highness The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex KG GCVO appointed the Sydney Cricket Ground as a Duke of Edinburgh International Award Employer at a special reception hosted at the ground last night.
In its 60th year, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award empowers young people to find their purpose, passion and place in the world.
HRH The Earl of Wessex, in his capacity as Chair of The Board of Trustees of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, was joined by representatives of Duke4Sport partners from state, territory and national sporting organisations.
He also met players from some of the SCG precinct's home teams, including Alex Newsome from the NSW Waratahs, crickets Peter Nevill, Lauren Cheatle and Moises Henriques, Dom Du Toit from the Australian Women's Sevens team, Sydney FC captain Alex Wilkinson and the Sydney Roosters' NRLW star Ruan Sims.
SCG Chief Executive, Kerrie Mather said: “The Duke4Sport provides a very real link between the clubs and codes that call the SCG home and the communities that support them and we are delighted to play a small role by hosting the reception.”
Partnering with the Duke 4Sport program provides a framework for sporting organisations to get their participants away from their screens and volunteering as umpires, coaches and more which can then be counted towards the internationally recognised Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.
Sporting organisations are seeing their participants give back to the sport they love, coach their juniors and come out the other side with new skills and experiences and the Award to back it up. Some of the recent partnerships include NSW Rugby Union, Surf Life Saving NSW, and Gymnastics Australia.
“The Duke 4Sport initiative encourages young adults to participate in sporting activities, when they may not have been motivated before - building on their social skills, mental health, and physical wellbeing and encouraging them to volunteer,” said Peter Kaye AM, CEO of the Award in Australia.
The Award in Australia has currently secured 16 Duke 4Sport partners and the reception was an opportunity to invite and meet with other sporting associations and potential Duke 4Sport partners. Some of the new Duke 4Sport partners include, Surfing NSW, Deaf Games Australia, Dance Sport Australia and Sport New South Wales.
