Employee honoured at NSW Business Chamber Awards
Sydney Cricket and Sports Grounds employee Matthew Millar has been named Outstanding Young Employee of the Year at the NSW Business Chamber State Business Awards.
The 31-year-old event staff customer service manager was presented with his award in front of 1000 guests, including Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Small Business Minister Damien Tudehope.
“Matthew Millar was a standout in his category,” NSW Business Chamber CEO Stephen Cartwright said.
“Matthew impressed the judges with his leadership skills in managing 400 casual staff and direct reports, together with his career achievements and personal goals.”
Millar accepted the award on behalf of the SCG and thanked the two people who accompanied him to the black-tie event on November 22 – his mum and his boss Jacqueline Cunningham.
SCG Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather said:
“While U2 were putting on their fantastic concert on Friday night at the SCG, our own Matt Millar was crowned the 2019 Outstanding Young Employee at the NSW Business Chamber State Business Awards.
“It’s a great credit to Jacqueline Cunningham and her team that Matt has developed into a highly valued member of our team who, along with Jess Girvan, looks after our 400 loyal and passionate event day staffers.”
SCG General Manager Human Resources Jacqueline Cunningham said:
“This award is a great example of the SCG’s ongoing commitment to the professional training and personal development of our staff.
“Matt started at the SCG almost five years ago with little people management experience but possessed a strong natural skillset and a thirst for learning.
“It has been a pleasure to guide and mentor him over the last four years and watch him develop and grow into his role.”
Millar acknowledged the SCG’s investment in his career and the guidance provided by Ms Cunningham.
“It’s an honour to be recognised by the NSW Business Chamber with this award,” he said.
“I am proud to be able to play a part in such a prestigious organisation like the SCG. This award is credit to the talented, passionate and loyal people that I get the opportunity to work with to deliver world-class customer experience at the SCG.”
Millar is currently responsible for the leadership and training of casual event day staff, plus budget and staff performance management.
Outside his responsibilities at the SCG, Millar’s immediate goals are to complete the three remaining subjects to achieve his MBA and to visit third world countries to build life experience.
