Anzac Day: Sydney Roosters v St Geo Illa Dragons

‘Age shall not weary them, nor the year’s condemn’…

The Sydney Cricket Ground will this year play host to the NRL’s second biggest day behind the grand final, and honour the memory of our treasured ‘Diggers’, in the Roosters v Dragons Anzac Day clash.

Families are encouraged to attend what is not just a day at the football but a significant celebration spanning all facets of our community.

Many servicemen will make their way to the SCG after morning celebrations to witness rugby league’s effort to pay homage to their sacrifice. The last post will be played, the combined services bands will be playing as a pre-cursor to the match and there might even be a cheeky game of ‘two-up’ in the outer.

Every single year this match delivers the most passionate, determined, never-say-die attitude on the field, and always provides an incredible spectacle worthy of rugby league’s nod to our cherished former and current servicemen and women.

Many players taking the field for the Australian national anthem are often overcome with emotion and fans by nature of the day are treated to a match with grand final-like intensity.

"I feel so privileged I am able to pay my respects to our soldiers in the best way I know how, and that is to represent them on the football field on Anzac Day,’’ Roosters skipper Boyd Cordner said.

The Roosters are reigning premiers but this counts for very little leading in to the annual event with the Dragons holding sway 11-6 on their fierce rivals over past matches.
