125 years of the Sydney Lawn Tennis Club 1880-2005
The Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust has mounted a new exhibition in its Museum to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Sydney Lawn Tennis Club. Since its foundation in 1880, the Club has been an integral part of the Sydney Cricket Ground, which provided tennis courts for ground Members as early as 1878. The display comprises many pieces of equipment and trophies loaned by the Sydney Lawn Tennis Club, items from the SCG collection, and copies of photographs sourced from the State Library and the NSW Hall of Champions.
Items lent by the Club include the City of Sydney Championship Trophy 1925-1939, an event which was conducted by the Club at the SCG from 1912 until 1940. The Class A Matches trophy won the SLTC in 1890 is also on display, along with shields and a J.O. Anderson tennis racquet.
The exhibition acknowledges the Club’s outstanding success in competition tennis, noting its dominance of the Metropolitan Badge Competition and displaying the pennant from its most recent win in 2004.
On display are photographs of some of the Club’s distinguished members, such as Adrian Quist, Ken Rosewall, Tony Roche, and Mark Edmondson. Mark Edmondson has lent a tennis racquet and trophy to the display.
The exhibition also highlights the group of Australian cricketers who have created a special link between the Club and the SCG. Cricketing greats who have been members of the Club include renowned Test cricketers such as Jack Gregory, Brian Booth, Arthur Morris, Ian Craig OAM and Alan Davidson AM MBE. A Club shirt and trophy from Ian Craig are on display.
The Sydney Lawn Tennis Club’s connection with the SCG has ensured its continued ability to attract quality players and remain at the top level of competition. The Club looks forward to a strong future while maintaining its historic links with the past, and hopes that visitors to the SCG Museum will enjoy finding out about our history.
History of the Sydney Lawn Tennis Club
The Sydney Lawn Tennis Club is Australia's oldest tennis club and has been based at the Sydney Cricket Ground since it was formed in 1880.
Tennis was introduced to the colony in the late 1870's and the Sydney Lawn Tennis Club (formerly the Association Ground Tennis Club) was a driving force in the destiny of the new sport.
In the early years, the Sydney Lawn Tennis Club controlled tennis in New South Wales and ran the NSW Championships from inception in 1885 until authority was handed over to the NSW Lawn Tennis Association in 1908.
Although the NSW Lawn Tennis Association was formed in 1890, it did not own any courts until it purchased property at Double Bay in 1906.
As a result, inter-colonial matches and state titles were played on the Sydney Lawn Tennis Club's permanent courts at the Sydney Cricket Ground, as well as on temporary courts marked out on the lush outfields of the Sydney Cricket Ground and the SCG No. 2 oval.
Over the years the club has had many distinguished members who have represented Australia in Davis Cup, including J O Anderson, J Clemenger, J Crawford, M Edmondson, H Hopman, A B Jones, N Peach, L Poidevin, A K Quist, A Roche, K Rosewall, C E Sproule, F Stolle and J Willard.
The club has always been predominantly for competition players who wish to play in the Metropolitan Badge Competition. The club has proven to be a powerful force in the competition and has won the No. 1 division on around 40 occasions.
