 First Grade Finalists

 1. Introduction

The Sydney (formerly known as the UTS Balmain) Cricket Club play in the world renowned Sydney Grade Cricket Competition. With 110 years of history and tradition, our Club has long been a mainstay of the competition.

Season 2007/08 saw the Club head in an exciting direction when it joined in a partnership with the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust to form the Sydney Cricket Club. The Club has some exciting and ambitious plans for the future which will lead, we believe, in the Club taking a position amongst the most important and prestigious Cricket Clubs, both domestically and internationally.

We play under our new banner in the Sydney Grade Competition but, for the first time in Sydney cricket, we will provide a structure and administration geared to incorporate a social playing division that will represent the Club against some of the most prestigious Clubs and at some of the best venues in the world of cricket.  In this regard we have looked to the Clubs at Marylebone and Melbourne. We believe that given time we will be viewed like those famous Clubs, as one of the premier Cricket Clubs in the world.

The Club had a successful 2007/08 season with our First Grade team making the finals series of matches.  We boasted the likes of former Victorian all-rounder Jon Moss as our skipper who led a formidable group of First Graders. We were also fortunate enough to have former International, Russel Arnold in our playing ranks for part of the season.

In the coming 2008/09 season we will be looking to improve our on field performances.  We will not be satisfied until we are threatening premierships in the various Competitions from 1st Grade to 5th Grade and right through to Green Shield level.

There are some serious opportunities for those cricketers who want to be part of the Club’s ambitious on- field plans for the future.  The Sydney CC will provide dedicated and committed players with the opportunity to improve their own performances and to be part of a successful Club culture.  Basically, it will be in the hands of each individual to embrace the challenge and get on board for what we believe will be a unique and exciting cricketing experience.

2. Overview

The 2007/08 season was a year where foundations were laid for future success. To quote a famous line from Vince Lombardi:

“If you stand still and rest on your achievements, you are going backwards at a fast rate”.

To ensure we are not standing still, we have recognized those areas where we need to improve our experience and skill level.  We recognize:-

  • We need to recruit players who will fit into our culture and perform to the highest level every weekend. We have the nucleus of a premiership winning 1st Grade team and need to find the right players to complement the existing playing roster.

  • We need players who will work with the lower grade players and pass on valuable knowledge and experience to fast track their rise up the grades.

  • We need players who are unselfish and understand that to be a winning team your personal goals have to be accomplished after the team’s goals.

  • We need players who are competitive.

  • We need players who let their actions do the talking through hard work.

  • We need players who embrace the club, its history, the volunteers who assist every week and the overall spirit of cricket.

  • We need to achieve success by planning; by continually improving and by working hard.

6. Drummoyne Oval

Drummoyne Oval has long been considered one of the superior Grade grounds and one of the more pleasant grounds at which to play cricket.

The Club, in conjunction with Canada Bay Council and Cricket NSW has some ambitious plans for Drummoyne which will see it at the forefront of our suburban grounds in Sydney.

The ground is about to undergo a multi-million dollar redevelopment that will include the installation of television–standard lighting, seating upgrades, the installation of an electronic scoreboard.  The first stage of the project involving the lighting upgrade is due to commence in October 2008 and will provide for the hosting of Ford Ranger Cup matches and Twenty/20 matches.  The Oval with its close proximity to the SCG will provide a first class “satellite” facility for cricket – effectively making the ground the SCG No.2.

The Club’s lower Grade grounds include Ryde Oval, ELS Hall (North Ryde) and Jubilee Oval (Glebe).
